Don't Sleep on the Defense

Even if stars like designated players Evander, Jonathan Rodriguez & Felipe Mora are getting all of the love with their goal scoring as of late. The Portland Timbers defense is also gaining form on the other side of the ball.

Saturday night's results have just as much to do with the squad's defense than it's offense. Yes, the backline could be held directly responsible for their opponents two goals. As one was scored by a player effectively lost track of near the goal & the other when a veteran world-class caliber player played misdirection with nearly the entire backline leaving an opposing player wide open in the process.

Most of the applause needs to go to the midfield, where the always stellar Diego Chara has found an ever evolving running mate in David Ayala who is coming to form before our eyes. Both players were responsible for possessions won & offense advanced thanks to their play.

If the Timbers can keep things tight on both sides of the ball going forward, they can secure a MLS Cup Playoff Spot. As they currently find themselves inside the top-10 in the west.

Saturday night's tie is another great sign for the club & fans. Their impending road trip will test this trending squad once again.

Next up is at CityPark against a St. Louis City SC team that just ended a skid of their own in a 3-3 tie against league leaders in points Inter Miami CF on Saturday.
